Transferring ownership
Transfer the Owner role of an organization, hand off integration connections, and reassign shared companies to another owner.
You can hand off control of an organization, integration connections, and shared companies to another member without recreating data. Each transfer type uses a different surface and has different permission requirements.
Overview
Three ownership transfers are available:
- Organization ownership — Move the Owner role from yourself to another member of the same organization. The previous Owner becomes an Admin.
- Integration connection ownership — Switch which member's imported feed actively syncs a linked company. The original feed remains imported but stops syncing.
- Shared company ownership — Reassign a company that was shared with another organization back to the owning member or to a different connection.
Only the current Owner can transfer the organization Owner role. Admins and Owners can switch the active feed for a linked company across users.
Transferring organization ownership
Use the members table to promote another member to Owner. This demotes you to Admin in the same step.
- Go to
Organization > Members. - Find the member you want to make Owner in the table.
- Open the row's action menu and select Transfer ownership.
- Confirm the transfer.
After the action completes, the selected member becomes Owner and you become Admin. A success toast confirms the change. If the demotion step fails, the system rolls back the promotion and no roles change.
Required role: Owner. The action returns a 403 error if a non-Owner attempts it.
Constraints:
- The target member must already belong to the organization. Invite the member first if they are not listed.
- The target member cannot already be the Owner.
- An organization has exactly one Owner at any time.
Transferring an integration connection
Use the data feed page to switch which imported QuickBooks Online or Xero feed actively syncs a company. The new feed must already be imported by another member or under another account.
- Go to
Integrations > Data feed. - Locate the linked company whose feed you want to switch.
- Open the row's action menu and select Switch active feed.
- In the Switch Active Feed dialog, review the current active feed.
- Select the replacement feed from the Available imported feeds list.
- Click Switch Active Feed.
After the switch completes, the company stops using the previous feed, starts syncing through the selected feed, and a resync is queued. A success toast confirms the change.
Required role:
- Member: can switch between feeds owned by the same user.
- Admin or Owner: can switch to a feed owned by a different user.
Cross-user candidates are marked Different user in the dialog. For Members, these candidates are disabled and show the Admin or owner only badge.
Constraints:
- The replacement feed must already be imported. If no other imported feed exists for the external company, another user or account must connect first.
- Switching the active feed does not delete the previous feed. The previous feed remains imported and available to switch back to later.
- A resync is queued automatically. Historical data is preserved.
Transferring a shared company
A shared company is one syncing through an integration owned by another member of your organization. To move it to a different owner, switch its active feed to one owned by the new target member.
- Go to
Integrations > Data feed. - Locate the shared company. Companies labeled managed in the owner organization appear in the summary badges.
- Open the row's action menu and select Switch active feed.
- Select an imported feed connected by the new target owner.
- Click Switch Active Feed.
After the switch completes, the company syncs through the new owner's connection. The previous owner's connection remains imported but inactive for this company.
Required role: Admin or Owner. Switching to a feed owned by a different user requires elevated permissions.
Constraints:
- The new owner must already have a connected and imported feed for the same external company.
- Companies marked as duplicate or shared remain visible in the data feed listing after the transfer. Use filters to hide them if needed.
Permissions
| Action | Owner | Admin | Member |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer organization ownership | Yes | No | No |
| Switch active feed (same user) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Switch active feed (across users) | Yes | Yes | No |
| Reassign a shared company to another owner | Yes | Yes | No |
Limitations
- Organization ownership transfer is not reversible by the new Owner alone. If you need the role back, the new Owner must perform another transfer to return it to you.
- An organization always has exactly one Owner. You cannot have zero or multiple Owners.
- Switching the active feed does not migrate or delete historical data. The data already imported through the previous feed remains in place.
- A resync is queued after every active feed switch. Sync time depends on provider rate limits and company size.
- Reconnecting an integration after disconnect requires re-authorizing the provider. Historical data remains, but a new authorization is required to resume syncing.
- Disconnecting an integration account does not transfer its companies to another member. To preserve syncing, switch each company's active feed to a different connection before disconnecting.
