Inflation and GDP Data
Compare your company's revenue and net income against national GDP, industry GDP, and inflation trends.
The Inflation and GDP page plots your company's rolling 12-month revenue and net income alongside macro-economic indicators over a 36-month window. This helps you identify how broader economic conditions correlate with your financial performance.
Page Layout
The page is divided into two main chart cards, each with three tab views. A month picker in the header controls the end date for all charts -- data covers the 36 months ending at the selected month.
Revenue vs. GDP/Inflation
The first card compares your rolling 12-month revenue against three economic indicators, one per tab:
National GDP
A dual-axis chart plotting rolling 12-month revenue on the left axis and U.S. national GDP (quarterly) on the right axis. Revenue appears as a line and GDP appears as a separate line. A summary bar above the chart shows the latest revenue value and period-over-period change.
Industry GDP
The same layout as National GDP but uses GDP data specific to your company's industry classification (based on NAICS code). This provides a more relevant comparison for understanding whether your growth aligns with your sector.
Inflation (CPI)
Plots rolling 12-month revenue against the Consumer Price Index. Useful for assessing whether revenue growth keeps pace with inflation. If revenue growth lags behind CPI, the company may be losing purchasing power despite nominal growth.
Net Income vs. GDP/Inflation
The second card mirrors the structure above but uses rolling 12-month net income instead of revenue:
National GDP
Shows whether profitability trends align with overall economic expansion or contraction.
Industry GDP
Compares net income against industry-specific economic output.
Inflation (CPI)
Reveals whether inflation is eroding margins -- if CPI rises faster than net income, real profitability may be declining.
Using the Month Picker
Click the month picker in the top-right corner to select a different end month. All six charts update to show the 36-month window ending at the selected month. The default is the most recent closed month.
Chart Interactivity
Each chart includes:
- Legend toggles -- click a legend item to show or hide that data series. At least one series must remain visible.
- Summary metrics -- a dashboard bar above each card shows the latest value and period-over-period percentage change for the primary metric (revenue or net income).
- Tooltip -- hover over the chart to see exact values for each data point at a given month.
Interpreting the Data
- Revenue tracking national GDP suggests the business is sensitive to overall economic conditions
- Revenue outpacing industry GDP may indicate the company is gaining market share
- Revenue growing slower than CPI means real (inflation-adjusted) revenue is declining even if nominal revenue is rising
- Net income diverging from GDP may signal company-specific factors like cost management or pricing changes
